Bouchercon 2010: Crimespree and Derringer Awards issued
Both the Short Mystery Fiction Society and Crimespree Magazine used Bouchercon 2010 to showcase award-winning writers. Jim Doherty presented the Short Mystery Fiction Society‘s 2010 Derringer Awards on October 15th. Crimespree Magazine, which is published by Jon and Ruth Jordan, announced its awards during Bouchercon’s concluding sessions on October17th.
Derringer Awards 2010
Both the winners and the nominees for the Short Mystery Fiction Society’s Derringer Awards have been posted on the society’s website. Hamilton Waymire won the 2010 Derringer for Best Flash Story for “And Here’s to You, Mrs. Edwardson” (Big Pulp, November 23, 2009). Anita Page’s “’Twas the Night,” (The Gift of Murder, edited by John M. Floyd, Wolfmont Press) won the Best Short Story Derringer. Doug Allyn’s “Famous Last Words” (Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, November 2009) won the Best Long Story Derringer.
Dave Zeltserman’s “Julius Katz” (Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, September/October 2009) won the Best Novelette Derringer. Keltserman had earlier received the 2010 Shamus Best P.I. Short Story Award for this work.
The Short Mystery Fiction Society also recognized the work of Lawrence Block (Matthew Scudder series, Keller series). Block received the Edward D. Hoch Memorial Golden Derringer for Lifetime Achievement.
Crimespree Awards 2010
Jon Jordan has listed the winners and nominees for the 2010 Crimespree Magazine award on the Central Crime Zone blog. The Mystic Arts of Erasing All Signs of Death by Charlie Huston (Ballantine Books) received the award for Favorite Book of 2009. Even by Andrew Grant (David Trevellyan Thriller series: Minotaur) won the Favorite First Book award. Walking Dead by Greg Rucka (Atticus Kodiak series, Bantam) was named the Best Book in an Ongoing Series for 2009.
Crimespree also presented its Jack Reacher Award to Val McDermid (Tony Hill / Carol Jordan series). Jordan states that Crimespree Magazine issues this award “to an author who is someone we would recommend to everyone we meet and is also great to their fans and gives back to the mystery community.” McDermid also won the Cartier Diamond Dagger Award winner from the Crime Writers Association this year in recognition a lifetime of outstanding achievement in crime writing.
